ABOUT THIS EPISODE
In this episode of UNMASKED, Olga Karpman sits down with Danny Rensch for a deeply personal conversation about chess, identity, purpose, family, adversity, spirituality, and finding meaning beyond achievement.
Danny’s relationship with chess began in childhood and became far more than a game. It became tied to purpose, self-worth, and the person he believed he was supposed to become. Years later, he had to confront a much harder question: Who am I if I am no longer defined by what I achieve?
Danny shares how rebuilding his relationship with his mother gave him perspective on his marriage, his past, and the meaning he had attached to chess. Through that process, he arrived at an idea that changed his relationship with purpose: purpose isn’t what you do—it’s why you do it.
Rather than walking away from chess, Danny found a different reason to choose it again—not simply as an achievement, but as a way to connect people, teach, serve, and create shared experiences.
When the titles, accomplishments, and masks come off—who are you underneath?

"Purpose is not what you do, it’s why you do it. I had to learn that I could rewrite my relationship with chess and what it meant to me. It didn’t have to be about achievement or proving who I was anymore. Chess could become a way to connect people, serve others, and create something meaningful. That gave me a much deeper sense of purpose beyond anything I was once told I had to become."
