🎙️Howie Mandel: When Comedy Becomes a Shield | OCD & Mental Health | UNMASKED
With Olga Karpman
THE 7 HIDDEN MASKS WE WEAR
And What They Reveal About Who We Really Are
A short guide to recognizing the roles we play — and
what they may be protecting beneath the surface.
ABOUT THIS EPISODE
Howie Mandel, legendary comedian, television host, and America's Got Talent judge, has spent decades making millions laugh.
But behind his quick wit and unmistakable humor lies a more personal story about identity, mental health, and the role comedy plays in his life.
In this episode of @Unmasked.OlgaKarpman, Howie Mandel @HowieMandelDoesStuff reveals why comedy has become his shield, opens up about his experiences with OCD, anxiety, and depression, and shares what it means to find comfort in discomfort.
From spontaneous laughter and unexpected moments to honest reflections on vulnerability and the masks we wear, this conversation explores a side of Howie Mandel that goes beyond his public persona.
“I live behind the shield of comedy.”
But what happens when the person behind the laughter begins to lower that shield?
Together, Olga and Howie explore the meaning of normal, the masks we wear, the difference between being funny and being vulnerable, and why sometimes wearing a mask can actually make it easier to open up.
This isn't just another conversation about comedy or success. It's an exploration of identity, honesty, and the parts of ourselves that the world doesn't always get to see.

Larry: Howie, drop the vest.
Howie Mandel: I'm comfortable with discomfort. I don't mind discomfort. I don't mind being uncomfortable. Comedy and humor is my protection.
Olga Karpman: Uh-huh.
Howie Mandel: I live be-hind the shield of comedy. Sometimes comedy allows you to, uh, not feel or focus on the pain or the darkness.
Olga Karpman: Howie.
Howie Mandel: I think I'm breathing. I trust you.
Howie Mandel: If I pass out, this will go viral. You- Yeah. How can anybody say no to this? This is like, you get, really get... I don't, I don't know that I said no. Sometimes... And I've been open about everything. I've been open about my mental health and OCD and depression and anxieties.
Olga Karpman: You have a six-pack, I think.
Howie Mandel: I have a keg.
Olga Karpman: Why people think that people from Hollywood and from TV are not that normal, not that human, not that-
Howie Mandel: You don't think I'm normal? I'm probably one of the most spiritual people you'll ever talk to. I d- when it comes to spirituality, I'm all in. Right.
Olga Karpman: No- Is there something that you just wanna get rid of?
Howie Mandel: My mental health issues I would like to get rid of, but I don't get rid of them, I cope with them.
Howie Mandel: You know, I suffer from OCD, and I'm gonna have an anxiety attack, and you have to call 911. And then it w- What's normal?
Olga Karpman: Uh-huh.
Howie Mandel: I'm asking you. I hope, uh, can I just say, if Oprah's watching this, this is good. If Oprah, if you're watching, you gotta do this, because it's not
Olga Karpman: like- Can Oprah-
Howie Mandel: This is not like any other podcast I've ever been on.
Howie Mandel: You don't even have to tell it. It's just, the laughter is worth it. That, it's like, listen- No, but the worth, the laughter is- I
Olga Karpman: can cut it off. It's my show.
Howie Mandel: Okay. If you just- But we can use this too, right?
Olga Karpman: Are you ready- Yeah ... for Unmasked Rapid Fire?
Olga Karpman: Welcome to Unmasked. I'm Olga Karpman. This is the show about what lies beneath.
Olga Karpman: Comedian, actor, television host. For more than four decades, Howie Mandel has been one of the most familiar faces in entertainment. He hosted Deal or No Deal, one of the biggest game shows of its time, and for more than 15 years, he has been one of the longest-standing judges on America's Got Talent. Howie is completely self-made.
Olga Karpman: He started with nothing but a microphone at an open mic night and a room willing to laugh. When the invitation came to sit down on Unmasked, Howie was intrigued, but no one knew what to expect from a conversation meant to reach beneath the surface, beneath the laughter. So stay tuned to find out if we made it beyond the comedy mask into identity, vulnerability, and what really matters.
Olga Karpman: Are you ready to go even deeper with Olga Karpman and Howie Mandel? Let's do it. So you might be wondering, what is she doing in curlers in Howie Mandel's studio? Well, let me explain. Few days before this interview, I bumped into Howie in my neighborhood. After years of watching him on TV and seeing how friendly he was in person, I knew I had to invite him on Unmasked.
Olga Karpman: So I worked up the courage, introduced myself, and had about three seconds to get his producer's number. I reached out immediately, and few days later, I got a call back. We set a date. I was so happy, and I thought I had plenty of time to prepare, and got so busy with other things. Well, then one morning, while I was still sipping my coffee, enjoying my morning in my robe and curlers, my phone rang.
Olga Karpman: Howie has an opening. Can you be here in 30 minutes? Uh, absolutely not, I said. This is LA and traffic. Oh my gosh, and I'm not prepared, but yeah, I can be there in an hour. Because when opportunity opens the door, sometimes you say yes and jump even without a parachute, even in your robe and curlers. Was I ready?
Olga Karpman: Well, watch the interview till the very end and find out. But if I was going to interview the boss of comedy, Howie Mandel, I could at least bring a bit of my sense of humor. That's what I thought. Stay tuned till the very end to see what really happened. And yes, please subscribe, like and share this video.
Olga Karpman: It really means the world to me, and of course, Howie. And we'll do our best to make you smile, well, at least once, hopefully during this podcast. Welcome to Unmasked. I'm Olga Karpman. Enjoy the show
Olga Karpman: This is what are we gonna do. We're gonna t- uh, first of all, everyone who comes in the show, they choose, they choose the mask.
Howie Mandel: Okay.
Olga Karpman: Because this is not only the mask that is the creator of this show, but also other mask. However, on Unmasked, we don't ch- take off the masks, we choose to look at them What?
Howie Mandel: Okay
Olga Karpman: It's about what build, what lives beneath the surface, Howie.
Howie Mandel: Oh, okay.
Olga Karpman: So- So- ... beneath the surface is- All right ... I, I love your patch, by the way. Is this from Josh? My what? Patch on your... Why are you wearing... Are you scared? Is that why you're wearing the-
Howie Mandel: No, this is, uh, weighted. It, uh, it's weights.
Olga Karpman: Oh, you exercise with these.
Howie Mandel: I'm exercising even though I'm just sitting here.
Olga Karpman: Ah.
Howie Mandel: I wear it all day
Olga Karpman: long. Okay,
Howie Mandel: okay. I w- why are you wearing a robe?
Olga Karpman: J- Jeremy, are we rolling?
Howie Mandel: Yeah.
Olga Karpman: Okay. Already?
Howie Mandel: On the show? We've been rolling from be- before I- Shoot ... even walked in. Oh
Olga Karpman: my gosh. We've been rolling. Uh, why? Yeah. Because I just got- You're not ready?
Olga Karpman: I am mom. I am... I just got out of the shower, and Rich called me. Yeah. And he's like, "Howie wants to see you."
Howie Mandel: Oh, yep.
Olga Karpman: I said, "Let's do this now." Uh, I did say no, I did say no, uh, first, but he convinced me to come. He's like, "I think that it's gonna be the-" Rich has to
Howie Mandel: understand that no means no. Um. I've gotta t- talk to that guy.
Howie Mandel: So do I put on the mask?
Olga Karpman: Well, first, I invite you to take a look at the masks. I'm gonna put on mine, for sure. Okay. All right. Go ahead. But you can have a choice to put on the mask or not-
Howie Mandel: I, I like it on ...
Olga Karpman: or hold it. I w- You like it on?
Howie Mandel: Yeah. I, I like it. It looks like it
Olga Karpman: fits. I, it's...
Howie Mandel: How does a mask not fit?
Olga Karpman: Oh, okay. First though, look at them. Which one do you choose? You
Howie Mandel: chose- This one ... the, the first
Olga Karpman: one.
Howie Mandel: It's got... It's, well, yeah. It's got music, and it's got, uh, other things. And I, I think I would look good in this.
Olga Karpman: Howie, did you look at other masks?
Howie Mandel: I see them all. But I would chose the one... I chose this one.
Olga Karpman: That's awesome.
Howie Mandel: Yeah.
Olga Karpman: Whoa.
Howie Mandel: Yeah, no, this is good. Whoa. Makes it-
Olga Karpman: Does it fit? Does it fit? Can you see me?
Howie Mandel: Hello? No, I think it fits.
Olga Karpman: I can't see your eyes.
Howie Mandel: You can't see my eyes? No.
Olga Karpman: Feel free to take it off at any time.
Howie Mandel: All right. Can you
Olga Karpman: breathe?
Howie Mandel: Can I breathe?
Olga Karpman: Yeah.
Howie Mandel: If- It's not covering my mouth.
Olga Karpman: Well, it's, but it's covering your nose.
Olga Karpman: How are you gonna talk and breathe at the same time?
Howie Mandel: How do you talk and breathe at the same time? I, I, I trust- I, I- I
Olga Karpman: trust you, Howie ...
Howie Mandel: I think I'm breathing. I trust you. If I pass out, this will go viral. Yeah.
Olga Karpman: Let's do it. Yeah. So I'm gonna put on my mask. Should I s- keep my rollers?
Howie Mandel: I don't- Everything? You m-...
Howie Mandel: There's too many decisions for me. Okay, we
Olga Karpman: don't have much time. I know. It's not, it's not much time. No, no, this is all
Howie Mandel: good.
Olga Karpman: All right. All right. Well, I also, I'm not prepared at all because, um- I'm not prepared either ... uh, for the short n- notice.
Howie Mandel: Okay.
Olga Karpman: I'm sorry. So I'm gonna, I'm gonna ju- it's okay. We're just gonna roll.
Olga Karpman: So I'm gonna just be reading questions from, uh, what my team send me, okay?
Howie Mandel: Oh, okay.
Olga Karpman: Are you okay with that? Yeah, I'm okay. They also have-
Howie Mandel: Whatever
Olga Karpman: your team wants to know ... um, millions people, uh, online watching, so they might send me some online. Oh, this is live? Um. Are we live? We're always live.
Howie Mandel: Okay.
Olga Karpman: We're always live.
Howie Mandel: All right. So
Olga Karpman: I got- When was the ti- last time you felt alive?
Howie Mandel: The last time I felt alive?
Olga Karpman: Yeah, very alive.
Howie Mandel: Wouldn't it be now? Like w- it just, like, you know-
Olga Karpman: Here, now?
Howie Mandel: Well, wouldn't- Wouldn't that be now? Like, if you're asking for the last time you've... Like, I don't feel dead. I don't feel like I'm not h- I'm here, aren't I?
Howie Mandel: Am I here? I think I feel alive.
Olga Karpman: It's a good question for Unmasked, actually, for
Howie Mandel: later. No, but I, I'm here. I think I'm here. Okay. I feel like I'm alive. Okay. I feel like I'm breathing. I know you're concerned about me, but I think that this is, the, I think I'm ali- ali- now. The answer is now. Now. You're now. I, I, my whole life is living in the now.
Howie Mandel: I gotta live in the now.
Olga Karpman: Ooh,
Howie Mandel: tell us more. I don't like to live in the past. I don't like living in the future. I need to... Because I have, uh, I've been open about my mental health. I like to live in the now. I like this. This is kinda cool. I've been- This
Olga Karpman: is good. Can you see me?
Howie Mandel: No.
Olga Karpman: No. No. That's good. That's actually a good thing.
Howie Mandel: It's better that I can't see you. It's,
Olga Karpman: it's better.
Howie Mandel: I can't see a thing. So, but tell
Olga Karpman: me, why did you choose this mask?
Howie Mandel: Pardon me. Why, why this? Because you said choose a mask, and it was the first one there.
Olga Karpman: It, the closest one.
Howie Mandel: Yeah, I'm not gonna spend-
Olga Karpman: So you know what? ... a lot of time choosing masks. I, I actually...
Olga Karpman: Oh, I'm sorry. I'm s- so sorry, Howie. I didn't give you this bla- bla- What is that? You can put it on. I know, I know that you are not really allowed to touch the mask, but if you wanna put it on and then you want to take off the-
Howie Mandel: I already touched the mask ...
or
Olga Karpman: it's- I don't
Howie Mandel: understand.
Olga Karpman: Well, I also have crystals and other stuff to talk about.
Howie Mandel: Okay, all right. Th- th- I'll talk about anything.
Olga Karpman: Yeah. I thought- But if you, if you wanna put, uh, gloves on, you can.
Howie Mandel: I'll hold them. Yeah. I don't wanna put them on. But if you want me to hold them, I'll hold them. All right. So I feel so
Olga Karpman: alive and- So this is the, the first thing. The first thing I grabbed from Costco, so um- You've
Howie Mandel: been to Costco?
Howie Mandel: These are brand new?
Olga Karpman: Yeah. E- brand new. W- what do you think, I would bring you used gloves? Well, that's why
Howie Mandel: I wasn't gonna put 'em on. I, I'll put 'em on if you want me to now that I know they're
Olga Karpman: brand new. They're com- they're new. Not-
Howie Mandel: They're new from Costco ... not a- What are they for?
Olga Karpman: Not a ha- hand was touching these gloves from the
Howie Mandel: inside.
Howie Mandel: But this mask, is this new? No.
Olga Karpman: Uh, this one new.
Howie Mandel: That's
Olga Karpman: not new. New. Bra- no, new.
Howie Mandel: Somebody
Olga Karpman: was... Nobody wore this? This is your show.
Howie Mandel: Nobody
Olga Karpman: wore this? Howie, did you know before you invited me that I only filmed three interviews?
Howie Mandel: N- no.
Olga Karpman: No.
Howie Mandel: You just, I bumped into you. Good for you. I don't know anything about this show.
Howie Mandel: I just intrigued. How do you say no to this?
Olga Karpman: So exactly.
Howie Mandel: I've- How can anybody say no to this? This is, like, you get, really get-
Olga Karpman: We can't start without actually clearing the space. Are you okay with that?
Howie Mandel: Clearing the space? Yeah. I can't even see the space. Where are you- Now you're cleaning up
Olga Karpman: Okay, so those are the special crystals, and I'm gonna tell you all about it later if you'd like.
Olga Karpman: Okay. I promise they've been places.
Howie Mandel: They've been places? Yeah. Well, then, uh, then I don't wanna see them- Yeah, they've been pla- ... if
Olga Karpman: they've been pla- They are really,
they're
Howie Mandel: really- I'm into the, I'm very comfortable- I'm not gonna let you touch them ... I'm comfortable with th- everything that's been, this has been- I'm not gonna let you touch them
Howie Mandel: these have been to Costco. I'm gonna, I'm gonna- What are you doing?
Olga Karpman: I'm gonna, I'm gonna just clear the space, Howie.
Howie Mandel: Okay, clearing the space. See,
Olga Karpman: we have to clear the space.
Howie Mandel: Clear the space! Oh, there's people recording in other rooms. Wait,
Olga Karpman: wait, wait.
Howie Mandel: Oh, what's, what's that?
Olga Karpman: Uh, this is
Howie Mandel: how- I hear it ...
Olga Karpman: you clear the space, Howie.
Howie Mandel: Okay.
Olga Karpman: It doesn't matter that I talk to very famous people, I have to clear the space.
Howie Mandel: I g- no. What
Olga Karpman: do you know about spirituality, Howie?
Howie Mandel: I'm probably one of the most spiritual people you'll ever talk to. I d- when it comes to spirituality, I'm all in.
Olga Karpman: What? Tell us more. How do you practice it on a daily basis?
Olga Karpman: Do you talk to aliens? I see, I see on that patch. What, and you, and you, Howie. The weight, the weight thing. Well- Oh, you can't see. I'm sorry, sorry. I
Howie Mandel: can't
Olga Karpman: see. What's the H stands for?
Howie Mandel: What does H stand
Olga Karpman: for? Howard, Harvard- Ooh ... Harry Potter, Harry Styles. What is it?
Howie Mandel: You, you are so in tune. Howie.
Olga Karpman: Oh, shoot.
Howie Mandel: Really?
Howie Mandel: That's your first question? You're sitting down with me- Well- ... and you ask me what the H stands
Olga Karpman: for ... to me, you're Mr. Mandel-
Howie Mandel: No,
Olga Karpman: no ... that I watch as a judge as America's Got Talent- Right ... for so many years.
Howie Mandel: But H, I found the
Olga Karpman: H- And saw you in the, my neighborhood, bumped into you.
Howie Mandel: Right. And
Olga Karpman: saw you
Howie Mandel: everywhere And you said you've got this concept for a, a
Olga Karpman: podcast.
Olga Karpman: How you liking it so far? Why did you even say yes- I
Howie Mandel: lo- I, I love it ... my podcast? Thank you Why wouldn't I say yes? Look at this. This is not like any other podcast I've ever been on.
Olga Karpman: That's for sure.
Howie Mandel: Can I post this too?
Olga Karpman: Of course.
Howie Mandel: I can post
Olga Karpman: this. Why do, why do you think I'm here? I w- I want, I want- This is great
Olga Karpman: I wanna know about you and what lies beneath the mask, but now I can't even see you. Well, I mean- Do you think, do you think people see you usually behind the mask when you are so funny on stage? And do they see- I don't wear this on stage ... the real you?
Howie Mandel: This is the real me. This is real. I m- uh, I think they see a, a piece of me.
Howie Mandel: Everybody sees... I can't be anything but me. I'm... That's wh- that's even the, the-
Olga Karpman: Even H.
Howie Mandel: Even H. It's
Olga Karpman: not Harry Potter.
Howie Mandel: It's... No, it's Howie. But, but the, the point is, I'm always me. I'm never, I'm never anybody else. I never try to be anybody else. So sometimes i- if they see me on stage and I'm silly, the silly is a piece of me.
Howie Mandel: Sometimes... And I've been open about everything. I've been open about my mental health and OCD and depression and anxiety. So I, I'm not, I'm not... I am an open book, but it is more comfortable to talk about, uh, yourself if you're w... Like this way, I know the anonymity of wearing, uh, whatever you've put on me-
Howie Mandel: allows me to be a lot more open.
Olga Karpman: Ooh. So does it allow you... Does the mask of laughter, uh, uh, allows you to go deeper than you usually?
Howie Mandel: Is this a mask of laughter?
Olga Karpman: Uh, well, maybe. Or are you talking about the mask of laughter? J- just, just- Well, you know, the two, the two- You're wearing... Just, you didn't even see what you were putting on.
Howie Mandel: No. No. But the thing is that I, uh, the, you're ta- if you're talking about the theatrical masks- Uh-huh ... of, uh, of, uh, comedy and tragedy, they're, they're very similar Right
Olga Karpman: Yeah ...
Howie Mandel: the one that's laughing and the one that's crying. There's, there's very little, there's very little... What are you... I know you're holding something up.
Howie Mandel: This
Olga Karpman: is another mask. The, the opposite mask of that one.
Howie Mandel: This is the opposite of
Olga Karpman: that? Yes.
Howie Mandel: What is this? The, the,
Olga Karpman: the- What do I have on my face? This one you... Okay, so first of all, I'm gonna tell you... W- which camera am I look... I'm gonna tell you at the end of this episode what this mask exactly means, and you already know it's a hint, hint, jester, right?
Olga Karpman: Uh- Hint, hint, jester ... and comedians usually choose the mask or wear that mask. Okay. Yeah. So Howie, jokes aside, I have a audience surprisingly, da-da, uh, and they did ask you many questions. Okay. Ask me the questions. Are you ready, are you ready to answer? I, I'll
Howie Mandel: be open and
Olga Karpman: honest. So they're gonna be rapid fire, um, mask game questions, okay?
Howie Mandel: Okay.
Olga Karpman: And at the end, uh, stay till the very end. Comment, comment here below. Me? Um, they're not you. Uh, Howie, I'm talking inside the camera. It's right there. They told me to look there.
Howie Mandel: To look where?
Olga Karpman: Right there.
Howie Mandel: I can't see.
Olga Karpman: But maybe you can
Howie Mandel: see. It doesn't matter. It d- no, it doesn't matter. I thought you were talking to me.
Howie Mandel: Go ahead.
Olga Karpman: Which is another camera. So I'm talking to them, if they wanna comment underneath this video and, and ask you more questions, maybe I'll get, uh, show number two.
Howie Mandel: Okay. What, if I,
Olga Karpman: if I- So, and, and, and then-
Howie Mandel: I'll look at the post. You tag me- Yeah ... in the post, and I'll also answer their comments.
Olga Karpman: Exactly.
Olga Karpman: I'm
Howie Mandel: happy
Olga Karpman: to- Do you, you promise to comment for me?
Howie Mandel: I promise.
Olga Karpman: Seriously?
Howie Mandel: Yes. You tell me when.
Olga Karpman: Psh. Guys, share this video for Howie decided to share this and comment.
Howie Mandel: Why wouldn't I? I, I wouldn't... If I said yes, I'm gonna do this.
Olga Karpman: I hon- You know what? I have to say, you're a very friendly neighbor. Every time, even though you celebrity stuff and all of this, you walk around the neighborhood, Howie-
Howie Mandel: I
Olga Karpman: don't-
Olga Karpman: absolutely without the mask, like a, like a normal neighbor.
Howie Mandel: I am a-
Olga Karpman: And you say hi ...
Howie Mandel: you don't think I'm... Hey, one thing about me, I'm nor- I'm a normal neighbor. Oh,
Olga Karpman: normal guy. Tell us more. W- w- why people think that people from Hollywood and from TV are not that normal? I don't know. Not that human, not that-
Howie Mandel: You don't think I'm normal?
Olga Karpman: I think you are. Well, I don't understand. That's why I approached you.
Howie Mandel: I, that, that's the question you have to ask the people who are commenting. I didn't know that people think I'm abnormal. I, I, I, I don't think... I, first of all, I don't like the word normal.
Olga Karpman: Uh-huh.
Howie Mandel: Uh, w- everybody- Why? Because what is normal?
Howie Mandel: No two people are alike. The... what's normal? What, what is, what is normal?
Olga Karpman: Uh-huh.
Howie Mandel: I'm asking you.
Olga Karpman: Um, yeah. I, I think it's, uh, it depends on the people's perspective of the world.
Howie Mandel: No- Feel like I'm just a r- regular... And even if they've never seen me before, I would imagine the people that are just clicking on this now are going, "He's so, he's so normal."
Olga Karpman: He's so normal.
Howie Mandel: He's so normal. Yeah. I didn't expect him, I didn't expect him to be this normal, yet I am so normal.
Olga Karpman: Okay. Well, to me, normal is whatever it is in your perspective of reality because we all have s- different systems, and I think society has a problem of looking, uh, at somebody through their lens and through their eyes, right?
Howie Mandel: You don't need to look at somebody through my lens.
Olga Karpman: Yeah.
Howie Mandel: You need to look at somebody through your lens.
Olga Karpman: So tell me, tell me sp- But
Howie Mandel: everybody wants to be like others, instead of being by themselves. Uh-huh. Think ab- about like themselves. Like, that, isn't that our whole society? People look at, at the internet to try to, uh, see how people are dressing, what they're wearing, what their cosmetics are, and things like...
Howie Mandel: Because they wanna do what they see somebody else doing. But not me. I, I- Wow. I try to... No, 'cause when I go like that- ... when the glove hits me, my glass... I'm wearing glasses. I don't know why I'm wearing glass- Can
Olga Karpman: I... Yeah, I, I think I can touch you without touching you,
Howie Mandel: right? Well, okay, go ahead.
Olga Karpman: Like, we'll, we'll go like this.
Howie Mandel: Okay.
Olga Karpman: Like this.
Howie Mandel: Oh, yeah. That's better.
Olga Karpman: Because then I can see your face.
Howie Mandel: Oh, I'm sorry. Okay. Yeah, it's important to see my face.
Olga Karpman: Or, or feel free to put it here so I can, like this.
Howie Mandel: Okay. Okay?
Olga Karpman: Okay. So you can be f- a little free in the motion.
Howie Mandel: Okay.
Olga Karpman: You can, by the way, exercise as you sit here, okay?
Howie Mandel: Well, that's why I'm, that's why I'm holding the weight up here.
Howie Mandel: Yeah, I
Olga Karpman: know. I, I, I took away... Yeah.
Howie Mandel: Okay. This is 40 pounds
Olga Karpman: of weight. But how is it exercising you? What's underneath there? Do you have a six-pack, I think?
Howie Mandel: I have a keg.
Olga Karpman: Oh.
Howie Mandel: Yeah. But I... It's not about getting a six-pack or getting... It's just because at, at my age, I'm an older person.
Olga Karpman: Uh-huh.
Howie Mandel: So at my age, uh, just carrying an extra...
Howie Mandel: This is 40 pounds. I stand, I'm on my feet all day. Uh-huh. I can't sit. I find it really hard to sit.
Olga Karpman: Howie, what weight do you still think you carry in your life that you wanna get rid of?
Howie Mandel: What weight?
Olga Karpman: Weight. Psychological weight or maybe like story weight. Like- I don't wanna get rid... No ... is there something, is there something that you just wanna get rid of?
Howie Mandel: My mental health issues I would like to get rid of, but I don't get rid of them, I cope with them. I don't, I don't think, I think everything that comes your way is, is a learning ex- uh, is, is a learning experience. So it's not like I wanna get rid of something, but I wanna get rid of my worry and my anxiety and my trepidat- and that's why, uh, all these things, I don't, I don't even think about it.
Howie Mandel: You're making me a little more introspective than I like being. I like, I like being in the now.
Olga Karpman: Mm-hmm.
Howie Mandel: I don't like, I don't, I d- I don't like, um, thinking about, uh, negativity.
Olga Karpman: Yeah.
Howie Mandel: I like... I, I'm a, I'm a, the glass is half full kinda guy.
Olga Karpman: Mm-hmm.
Howie Mandel: Yeah.
Olga Karpman: So, b- uh, okay, but for people who are watching and would like to not only cope, uh, with that, n- because in my perspective, if you have a desire and you take a step, and for people who are watching and want to find tools how to help with the negati- with the mental health, um, what are the specific tools?
Olga Karpman: Do you think maybe we need to take that mask off, the stories that we told ourselves that cause us anxiety-
Howie Mandel: No, I think you- ... and look at them? ... just have to be aware of it and talk about it and be open about it, and that's the first, uh- Step ... mask to remove 'cause the mask- Ah ... not talking about it and staying quiet about it is you are masking it.
Howie Mandel: And we all try to mask our pain, but I've, uh, you know, I accidentally unmasked my pain that I've d- dealt with my whole life of my mental health, and then now, and, and-
Olga Karpman: Tell us more about it. How accidentally? You see- I, I, I- ...
Howie Mandel: as I mentioned, I didn't
Olga Karpman: prepare that
Howie Mandel: much ... you didn't prepare. Mm-hmm. I have a book.
Howie Mandel: In the, in the book, in my, in my autobiography, I talk about I was accidentally, uh, s- spewed out on The Howard Stern Show. I talked about how I- I
Olga Karpman: remember that ...
Howie Mandel: uh, I was, uh, uh... and because they wouldn't open the door for me, and I didn't wanna touch the door, and they weren't nice enough like you to give me gloves.
Howie Mandel: So, um, I just said I, I, you know, I suffer from OCD, and I'm gonna have an anxiety attack, and you have to call 911. And then it was out on the radio, and I didn't realize, and I got scared that I had outted myself as somebody who has a mental health issue. And then people who approached me right after that said, "It's so wonderful that you said that because I, I have these issues, too."
Howie Mandel: And, and that made me feel comfortable to know 'cause when you have mental health issues, you always feel like you're very alone. But I'm not.
Olga Karpman: Mm-hmm.
Howie Mandel: I'm not, I'm not alone.
Olga Karpman: You're not alone- Uh, no ... and, and, and, uh, you're not crazy.
Howie Mandel: No, I'm very- Yeah ... I'm very, uh- No ... grounded and, um, just like anybody else. D- Life is a process.
Howie Mandel: Life is a journey. And you know, you take each day as it comes, and you just d- you cope. Coping is, is what the exercise of life is. How do you cope? Everybody has bad things and good things and weird things happening to them every minute that you're alive. It's not about those things. You don't focus on those things.
Howie Mandel: It's how you deal with those things.
Olga Karpman: Mm-hmm. And, uh, what's your advice for people who are listening? How do you deal with those things from your personal perspective, from your personal opinion?
Howie Mandel: Well, everybody has a different, uh, coping mechanism. You know, I, I actually go to therapy, and I'm medicated, and I distract myself.
Howie Mandel: I'm living in the now I just- This is what's happening now. But if somebody wants to know, hey, what's Howie doing now, uh, look
Olga Karpman: So if you had to wear a mask, a completely new mask, uh, v- n- from the, your regular mask for entire year, different mask, what do you think it would be?
Howie Mandel: Well, I wouldn't wear a mask. I don't wanna wear a mask.
Howie Mandel: I don't think wearing masks is healthy. I don't. I wouldn't wanna mar- wear a mask. I always wanna be open, and I wanna be myself, and I wanna, and I wanna be able to deal with, uh, whatever comes my way. Mm-hmm. Wearing a mask is like a shield. I don't want a shield.
Olga Karpman: Mm-hmm.
Howie Mandel: Okay. I wanna feel it. Uh,
Olga Karpman: Howie, your wish is my command.
Howie Mandel: What?
Olga Karpman: I'm gonna remove the mask
Howie Mandel: now. No,
Olga Karpman: no. You asked for it.
Howie Mandel: Oh, I've asked for it? Oh, wow. Oh,
Olga Karpman: finally viewers can see. Can you see?
Howie Mandel: Yeah, no, I can't. Oh. It's all fogged up.
Olga Karpman: Uh, the viewers- Do you know they could agree ... are probably thinking, uh, she's, she doesn't even have Howie there. And, and this is sweaty. I can remove my mask.
Olga Karpman: I'm
Howie Mandel: sweaty?
Olga Karpman: And the... Are they?
Howie Mandel: I, I don't know. You- They're
Olga Karpman: yours now, by the way.
Howie Mandel: What are you... What's mine?
Olga Karpman: The, the, the gloves.
Howie Mandel: What are you doing?
Olga Karpman: The gloves. Well, I have to, I have to take it off now. Like, I want, I wanna have a s- second shot already without this whole stuff.
Howie Mandel: All right.
Olga Karpman: Yeah, and no mask- I don't really
Howie Mandel: understand what's happening
Olga Karpman: and everything ... but it's okay. So I'm gonna, I'm gonna, I'm gonna just act like, uh, I'm, you know,
Howie Mandel: uh- Oh, there you go ...
Olga Karpman: oh.
Howie Mandel: Ah.
Olga Karpman: Can you see? Can I- Can you see the spots now on
Howie Mandel: this? See the spots?
Olga Karpman: Look at this. Next, on my
Howie Mandel: face. What spots are we looking at? No, I can't see.
Olga Karpman: Oh, finally. Ah. I'm,
Howie Mandel: I'm so
Olga Karpman: hot. I'm gonna j-
Howie Mandel: Oh.
Howie Mandel: Oh, there you go ...
Olga Karpman: just take it off
Howie Mandel: Oh, it was a costume ... and I
Olga Karpman: can-
Howie Mandel: Oh, look at you. Ooh ...
Olga Karpman: now I can be normal self.
Howie Mandel: Now you're nor- your normal self.
Olga Karpman: Ooh.
Howie Mandel: Ooh.
Olga Karpman: Boy.
Howie Mandel: Okay.
Olga Karpman: Let me see.
Howie Mandel: Wait one second. Oh. I don't know what's going on. I can even see- This is st- ... you can even
Olga Karpman: see. Oh my gosh.
Howie Mandel: It's like a super
Olga Karpman: hero. Wow.
Olga Karpman: There
Howie Mandel: you
Olga Karpman: go Now we can s- well, now we can have a serious conversation, Howie.
Howie Mandel: Oh, we didn't have a serious conversation? And-
Olga Karpman: Mm. You know, a lot of things can be done through laughter. You know, jesters were the ones who delivered the bad news to the emperor, like my best friend Alex would say, because they are the one that were telling the truth to the world.
Olga Karpman: Do you feel like from stage you did tell a lot of truth that you would not say otherwise through, without laughter?
Howie Mandel: Well, I've always tried to, uh... You know, everything I've ever been punished for, expelled for, gotten in trouble for, is what I get paid for. I don't know that I'm, uh, spreading a message or telling anybody anything, but I do enjoy myself on stage because it's the purest form of- Communication and, uh, the, and, and, and, you know, the, it's...
Howie Mandel: That's my art form is stand-up comedy, and I think of it as an art form so that if I can paint, uh, a scene with words based in reality that connects a group of people that I don't know, so we're all connected, and they're all laughing at the same time, that's a really good feeling. And it's like, it's like a painting, and then unveiling a painting, and everybody goes, "Wow."
Howie Mandel: Well, I don't get wows, but hopefully sometimes I get ha has.
Olga Karpman: If... What if you don't get a ha ha?
Howie Mandel: That's just quiet and uncomfortable.
Olga Karpman: What's your, um, advice to people who are so scared to go out there for a lot of different reasons, because they feel uncomfortable, because they feel insecure, and they don't get that a-ha, or they get nothing?
Olga Karpman: For comedians, it's the worst thing, right? Like-
Howie Mandel: It's not the worst thing for me. I don't mind if I don't get a laugh. I learn something, or I live in that moment or in that... I'm comfortable with discomfort. I don't mind discomfort. I don't mind being uncomfortable. I never mind being uncomfortable. It makes me feel alive.
Howie Mandel: I don't have, you know... And, and now I'm, I'm really medicated, so I'm kinda numb to, to control my, uh, my, uh, OCD and stuff like that. So if I can have... It's like a rollercoaster. If I can have a really uncomfortable moment, it makes me feel alive. Like, it was uncomfortable sitting with the mask and the gloves
Olga Karpman: Oh, thank you for meeting.
Olga Karpman: I felt that. You were asking to remove it. You know, I think in life, in general- I didn't
Howie Mandel: know I was asking to remo- move
Olga Karpman: it ... people should not be j-
Howie Mandel: But that's just bl- that's the sa- same mask.
Olga Karpman: Of course. Very cool. It, it has a cool story. Did you see? Did you see white and black, but do you see how white, what we usually see as black painted white?
Howie Mandel: Oh.
Olga Karpman: And what we usually see as white-
Howie Mandel: Painted black ...
Olga Karpman: painted black. Why do you think it is?
Howie Mandel: Now, I would think that that's because the, the, the, you wanted the black to be lighter, so you painted it white, and you want the white to be darker, so you paint it black.
Olga Karpman: Hmm, almost.
Howie Mandel: Almost.
Olga Karpman: Almost there. The real reason was because when I look at things, I know that not everything is it seems.
Howie Mandel: Right. Sometimes
Olga Karpman: it can be stuff- And what we think, you just brought it up ...
Howie Mandel: yellow.
Olga Karpman: You just brought things up... You just told us what we, I see as a discomfort and what everyone see as a horrible thing, right? I view it as a light thing, and I take that, that no one laughed and that discomfort, I take it for myself as a thing to look for here and now.
Olga Karpman: Didn't you just say that?
Howie Mandel: Yeah, I think I did. But
Olga Karpman: I s- So black is not black- No ... white is not white- Right ... and there is no black without white.
Howie Mandel: R- right.
Olga Karpman: And white without black. R-
Howie Mandel: right.
Olga Karpman: Right, right. Because not everything as it seems.
Howie Mandel: Right.
Olga Karpman: So what do you think other people see you as on stage that you are not?
Howie Mandel: A Black man?
Olga Karpman: Could be.
Howie Mandel: That's my... But I'm white.
Olga Karpman: You're white.
Howie Mandel: But people see me as- But that
Olga Karpman: could be their perception of you ...
Howie Mandel: that I'm a bl- that I'm an African American person. I get it now.
Olga Karpman: You see?
Howie Mandel: I do.
Olga Karpman: And in the middle of it is consciousness.
Howie Mandel: Okay.
Olga Karpman: So God, Creator, whoever you wanna choose to believe in, created everything as is, and it's only our point to look at something and give it labels.
Howie Mandel: But as is, is that the same as that was? Like, if that, th- like, so then that's your perception of after. But
Olga Karpman: what was? Was doesn't even exist. Is. It only exists in- But
Howie Mandel: that's why I said the now. But is the now then or was?
Olga Karpman: The now is now, just this moment. Whatever you had this on a while ago is not now. But it could be now.
Howie Mandel: But it was.
Olga Karpman: You could be... It could be now if you get inside of yourself-
Howie Mandel: Mm-hmm ...
Olga Karpman: and you see everything through your own eyes.
Howie Mandel: Right.
Olga Karpman: Again, you can rewrite your own story.
Howie Mandel: Right, but everybody has a different per- perspective, so what was isn't what is.
Olga Karpman: Do you think people can choose the new perspective?
Howie Mandel: Hmm.
Howie Mandel: That's deep. I can't decide
Olga Karpman: Why?
Howie Mandel: That's just the way it is.
Olga Karpman: But what's stop-
Howie Mandel: Or the way it was. And it's always, it, it, uh,
Olga Karpman: but the- Do you think it's because people possibly afraid of the bigger picture of them?
Howie Mandel: That's exactly right. That's exactly
Olga Karpman: right. So the old version is outgrown as if identity is gone-
Howie Mandel: Mm-hmm
Olga Karpman: and it's scary to look at the different version of yourself because everyone else knows you. You are deciding who to be at that moment, not-
Howie Mandel: But that's not what is
Olga Karpman: N- it could be because it's you looking.
Howie Mandel: You're right.
Olga Karpman: I agree. Who's looking? Who's creating?
Howie Mandel: You're looking at yourself through your own eye- this is through your own eyes.
Olga Karpman: But who is creating, Howie?
Howie Mandel: Us.
Olga Karpman: Why? No. Well, yes. I created the version of you in my eyes. Your wife created
Howie Mandel: the version- But do we not create a version of ourselves in our own eyes, yet the other people don't perceive us as-
Olga Karpman: They perceive as what they see, their own hologram. So Jeremy is looking through the screen and he sees one angle, I see another angle.
Howie Mandel: And,
Olga Karpman: and I- Jeremy, I can't talk to him
Howie Mandel: because I'm not, I don't
Olga Karpman: have my headset on, but- I think people see completely different angle behind it ... cut to yourself, Jeremy. What are you
Howie Mandel: seeing?
Olga Karpman: Behind you. Look behind you. Okay. That's what people see. What is that? That's what people see. I don't... Who is this?
Howie Mandel: Me.
Olga Karpman: W- why this underwear there?
Howie Mandel: Oh, because they sponsor my, my podcast. Oh,
Olga Karpman: I see. MeUndies.
Howie Mandel: Well,
Olga Karpman: that's what they see. That's what they pay attention to.
Howie Mandel: They're paying att- Wait, with all this deep talk, they're paying attention to that?
Olga Karpman: Could be. Can you believe if we're having such a deep conversation and someone only looking there and paying attention there?
Olga Karpman: So isn't it tell us something that we choose what to look at?
Howie Mandel: Now I see.
Olga Karpman: Right?
Howie Mandel: Live behind the shield of comedy.
Olga Karpman: So where you wanna go next from here? But it, I think-
Howie Mandel: The men's room, really. I mean, after we
Olga Karpman: finish. Next... Yeah, yeah. Mm-hmm. You have another show? We, we can talk- No, that's just a, just a- ... on and on forever.
Howie Mandel: No, I'm just saying, uh, I said the men's room, the, uh,
Olga Karpman: the- Yeah. No, the, the next room. Ah, men's room. To- Well, you can go. I can wait.
Howie Mandel: No, it's okay.
Olga Karpman: Is it-
Howie Mandel: I can hold it.
Olga Karpman: Is it number one, two? One. Long, long?
Howie Mandel: One.
Olga Karpman: And- So anyways, um, so what's one question you wish interviewer would stop asking you? I think I didn't ask any good ones today, but-
Howie Mandel: Uh, you don't think you asked any good...
Howie Mandel: I think you were, I think this was a good interview. I think this was... You don't?
Olga Karpman: Of course I know.
Howie Mandel: What?
Olga Karpman: Of course I know, but keep answering my question.
Howie Mandel: Okay.
Olga Karpman: What is one question you wish interviewers would stop asking you?
Howie Mandel: Calculus questions, 'cause I find that calculus is tough. I didn't enjoy it in school and I wasn't- Mm
Howie Mandel: good at it. I find it hard. I don't find it interesting, and I wish that people would just stop asking me.
Olga Karpman: You know who can help you next time? No. Next time you're gonna see- Mathematician. Oh-ho. I think I'm gonna get paid for this promotion. Okay. And that was not intentional. Did you see the book? It was here- No, I haven't seen your book.
Olga Karpman: I didn't- ... from the very beginning. I was gonna give it to you.
Howie Mandel: Okay. Oh.
Olga Karpman: Are you ready for this?
Howie Mandel: I am ready.
Olga Karpman: Is Danny Rensch. He's a chess master. He knows math and calculus and all the moves ahead.
Howie Mandel: I didn't even know
Olga Karpman: that. Million, million things ahead. He's the co-founder of Chess.com
Howie Mandel: The co-founder of what?
Olga Karpman: Chess.com. Do you play chess?
Howie Mandel: Chess.com?
Olga Karpman: Yeah, chess. You know- Yeah ... the biggest platform- No, I know what chess is ... in the world that plays chess. People play chess. Oh,
Howie Mandel: chess.com.
Olga Karpman: Chess.com.
Howie Mandel: Oh, I thought you were... N- nothing, never mind.
Olga Karpman: I- Not chest. No, that's- Not chess.com ... that's not
Howie Mandel: even where I was.
Olga Karpman: Howie, I don't even know if it exists.
Olga Karpman: Like, we're gonna erase this, but we don't wanna promote any other chess game.
Howie Mandel: No, chess.com. Chess. I'm gonna read this. Dark squares.
Olga Karpman: Yes.
Howie Mandel: How chess saved his life?
Olga Karpman: He was in cult. He was born into cult, Howie.
Howie Mandel: Cult?
Olga Karpman: Cult.
Howie Mandel: I know I saw him on your podcast.
Olga Karpman: Oh, you watched the content. All right. Ooh. Ooh. Will you, will you watch if Oprah comes?
Howie Mandel: What?
Olga Karpman: Oprah. I'm, I'm aiming for Oprah.
Howie Mandel: Oh, well, I would imagine that's the next step after this. Will you watch it? I'm, I, if... Yes, I will. I hope, uh, can I just say, if Oprah's watching this, this is good. If Oprah, if you're watching, you gotta do this because it's not like- Yes,
Olga Karpman: Oprah ...
Howie Mandel: it's not like any other podcast I've ever been on.
Olga Karpman: Do you see this? This is insane. I just launched first interview two months ago, FYI.
Howie Mandel: Unbelievable. FYI, I. You left out the I.
Olga Karpman: FI. FI. Well- What's that FI? English is my... But Howie- That's not even English. That's an acronym ... English is my second- No, I get- ... language ...
Howie Mandel: I get that. I get that. It's so- But do you know what
Olga Karpman: F- Do you know what's, uh, it's the biggest thing for me when kids don't understand when I say something bad?
Howie Mandel: No,
Olga Karpman: you didn't
Howie Mandel: say
Olga Karpman: anything bad, but- And they, and they're like- But, uh- ... "Uh, mom." I was like, "English is my second language." But FYI, I, I just ate it. Like, uh, Y. Or, or... Like, I was too excited to say something else.
Howie Mandel: So you
Olga Karpman: said what? So you said what? FYI.
Howie Mandel: Oh, yeah.
Olga Karpman: I- do you know what else I know?
Howie Mandel: No.
Olga Karpman: Uh, okay, wait.
Olga Karpman: English. Thank God it's Friday. T, uh, G, uh, H- I, uh, I F.
Howie Mandel: Mm-hmm. That's amazing. It's an acronym.
Olga Karpman: I can't spell, Howie.
Howie Mandel: It's amazing. The things that we're discovering on this episode. The thing that makes me
Olga Karpman: happy.
Howie Mandel: It should make you happy. Dude. I- hey, listen, I, I'm not gonna laugh at you. I, this is the only language I know.
Howie Mandel: So the fact that you're able to communicate in two languages, or maybe do you have more? It,
Olga Karpman: uh, well, do you consider cursing is another language?
Howie Mandel: As a language?
Olga Karpman: Uh-huh.
Howie Mandel: yeah.
Olga Karpman: Yeah, this is I'm talking about. Can I curse? Yeah. No, I can't. If, if- Do you curse on this? Uh, yeah. So Howie, I know that we're gonna wrap up because, uh, apparently Rich wants you to go to another, uh- I got another show
Olga Karpman: show. Maybe-
Howie Mandel: I have another
Olga Karpman: show ... b- b- boring, not as much fun as this. Not as much fun as this. No. This is great. But I have millions of questions. So- So ask them ... uh, do you wanna do rapid fire? Let's do rapid fire.
Howie Mandel: I think you mentioned that a while
Olga Karpman: ago. Yes. So p- people know that they were not waiting for nothing.
Olga Karpman: Okay, so I'll choose randomly. Are you ready? Yeah. For Unmasked rapid fire.
Olga Karpman: Morning person or midnight person?
Howie Mandel: M- m-
Olga Karpman: midnight Morning person or midnight person?
Howie Mandel: Midnight.
Olga Karpman: Deal or No Deal or America's Got Talent?
Howie Mandel: Deal's Got Talent
Olga Karpman: Who's judge or comedian?
Howie Mandel: Comedian.
Olga Karpman: Would you rather make an audience laugh or make one person laugh really hard?
Howie Mandel: Audience.
Olga Karpman: Would you rather know exactly what everyone thinks of you or never know at all?
Howie Mandel: Ignorance is bliss. Never know.
Olga Karpman: What is something you can never resist doing when you know you probably should?
Howie Mandel: What is something you never resist doing even though you know you probably should?
Olga Karpman: Uh-huh.
Howie Mandel: Breathing?
Olga Karpman: Do you think laughter is sometimes a way to tell the truth?
Howie Mandel: Yes.
Olga Karpman: Do you think, um, what's comedy allowed you to carry that might have been harder to carry without it?
Howie Mandel: Grief
Olga Karpman: Ooh
Howie Mandel: Ooh
Olga Karpman: About what?
Howie Mandel: Whatever grief you have in life. Sometimes comedy allows you to, uh, not feel or focus on the pain or the darkness. It's like the mask.
Olga Karpman: Do you think you grieve of the version of yourself that's not here or was there?
Howie Mandel: No. Things that happen in life around me that are not losing people, losing things, grief, just in general.
Olga Karpman: What do you see as your next stage of your evolution, soul evolution?
Howie Mandel: Oh, death I'm an old guy
Olga Karpman: H- you are young. Don't you think with the, all the, uh, life injections and everything, like, you gonna be living longer than usual?
Howie Mandel: Nope.
Olga Karpman: No?
Howie Mandel: No.
Olga Karpman: So what do you wanna leave behind?
Howie Mandel: Oh, uh, I have a kayak in Marina del Rey.
Olga Karpman: Did you put it in the will?
Howie Mandel: No, but now that you bring it up, I will.
Olga Karpman: Uh, how about the, the, the, the... What's it called in English, oar?
Howie Mandel: Oar?
Olga Karpman: Yeah, for kayak. Is that included? I think that- Is it, like-
Howie Mandel: I think so. I didn't even think of that, but you're a detail person. I'm not. I was just thinking about the kayak.
Howie Mandel: How
Olga Karpman: about the life vest?
Howie Mandel: I don't have one.
Olga Karpman: Ooh, do you think it's important for people sometimes to have a life vest?
Howie Mandel: That's a good question. Yes, I think it's always important to have a life vest when you're, uh, travailing out into rough seas.
Olga Karpman: Who do you think will save you first if they had a vest and you didn't?
Olga Karpman: Who out of your people around you?
Howie Mandel: Um, co- the, uh, US Coast Guard, you think? D- don't you think that
Olga Karpman: they would be- W- what if you're traveling with your closest friends and family, and they only had one choice? They have a vest, you don't. Only one person has one vest, and they have to save only you. Who would it be?
Howie Mandel: I don't understand. I don't understand the question. If they had to save one person, only me-
Olga Karpman: Well, imagine Titanic ... who would it be? Imagine Titanic. I'm
Howie Mandel: imagining the Titanic.
Olga Karpman: So- I don't understand the question ... you guys are going down.
Howie Mandel: Right.
Olga Karpman: And then who is that person who cares about you so much- I don't think-
Olga Karpman: they're gonna pull you out of there and out of all the people-
Howie Mandel: Not everybody wants my kayak. I don't think that anybody's
Olga Karpman: gonna pull
Howie Mandel: me out ...
Olga Karpman: No, maybe they want the oar. But, but, but now you're not in the-
Howie Mandel: You're right. You're right about that. Yeah. You are. I don't understand the question.
Olga Karpman: Who is that person, Howie?
Olga Karpman: I don't even- Don't laugh. I know where you're going.
Howie Mandel: Larry. You know where I'm going? Larry.
Olga Karpman: Larry.
Howie Mandel: Yeah.
Olga Karpman: It's not your wife, not your kids. Larry. Who is Larry? I wanna know Larry. And how is it my problem now?
Howie Mandel: Larry's the, uh, the one person I think that I would choose.
Olga Karpman: But, but
Howie Mandel: you don't
Olga Karpman: choose, Howie. If there was one person saving me...
Olga Karpman: You don't choose. Then they choose you.
Howie Mandel: You're right. It can't be Larry.
Olga Karpman: Will Larry choose you? Is he your best friend?
Howie Mandel: Not a- not actually.
Olga Karpman: No? I
Howie Mandel: just thought... You're right. You're right. You're making me re-think this. Would it be... Would it be one of my children? Or no, no, I think-
Olga Karpman: Jackie?
Howie Mandel: Jackie? Jackie is the co-host.
Howie Mandel: I
Olga Karpman: think she would- I
Howie Mandel: think I- I think she would save you. I think Larry would. Yeah? I really do.
Howie Mandel: Howie, drop the vest Oh, before
Olga Karpman: I think she would've Would you save Larry? Let me reverse that. Would you save Larry?
Howie Mandel: No.
Olga Karpman: Larry. Mine. Hmm. What would you say if you had to say one thing about relationship with people around you, like Larry?
Howie Mandel: Yeah.
Olga Karpman: What really stands out for you? What's important?
Howie Mandel: Respect.
Olga Karpman: Hmm.
Howie Mandel: Respecting... Respect who's ever around you. Respect. Equal respect. Respect
Olga Karpman: humanity. How about honesty?
Howie Mandel: What?
Olga Karpman: Honesty. Is it important to you that friends are honest?
Howie Mandel: You're right So then I was lying, 'cause respect isn't what's important to me. It's, uh, honesty. Honesty. Honesty, 'cause you wanna know where you stand.
Howie Mandel: You're right. You're right. Respect's not important. Honesty. Honesty.
Olga Karpman: I'm gonna go- And I think based on if he saved you, I think loyalty is pretty cool too.
Howie Mandel: Oh Okay, forget honesty. Loyalty. Loyalty. I'm gonna say loyalty
Olga Karpman: So, uh, if you have a hierarchy of values, but not what you think they should be for TV, stage, and whatever, but the next version of Howie that's emerging right now, the next...
Olga Karpman: What are the hierarchy? What would be that first value in life?
Howie Mandel: Honesty Loyalty And what was the
Olga Karpman: third one? Kayak.
Howie Mandel: No, what was the third?
Olga Karpman: Respect. The, the, the... Oh. The, the- Oh, it
Howie Mandel: was
Olga Karpman: respect- Mm-hmm ... honesty, and- It was respect, honesty, and loyalty. Now, would, would you choose to move them? Because you say, "Oh, no, you're right.
Olga Karpman: This one is more important than that."
Howie Mandel: You kept, you, you kept disagreeing with me and then moving my-
Olga Karpman: No, I'm not. I'm just discussing. You know, it's just like a discussion.
Howie Mandel: It's hard to say. I would say decisiveness.
Olga Karpman: Ooh, 'cause he made the decision to save you.
Howie Mandel: Right.
Olga Karpman: He, then he was loyal. 'Cause, uh, yeah, you're right.
Olga Karpman: Like, imagine the person- No, hon- honesty ... standing on the boat and doesn't- Right ...
Howie Mandel: make a decision. But honesty, aside from being in that kind of situation, honesty is important. No, decisiveness. If you wanna, if you wanna, like, knowing what you want and then going f- respect. I think it's respect. Is this how you- To respect is I, I think that people don't respect other people, and that's why they'll say things that are demeaning and like...
Howie Mandel: I still think it's decisiveness. Hmm.
Olga Karpman: But is this how you choose people? Well, so there is a next version of Howie-
Howie Mandel: I think people come your way ...
Olga Karpman: ba-
Howie Mandel: based on
Olga Karpman: that ...
Howie Mandel: you don't choose. You don't choose, but you choose who you respect and who you... But decisiveness is so important. Hmm.
Olga Karpman: Well, I guess it's gonna be episode two at some point, so you can tell me
Howie Mandel: if you- Would you have me back?
Olga Karpman: Let's see how your, how your team is cooperating. I'm not sure.
Howie Mandel: Team? It's just Jeremy.
Olga Karpman: Yeah. Uh, it's just Jeremy. Jeremy, I... Well, and then he's going to the show, so I think he'll
Howie Mandel: be there. Are you going to, are you gonna go to the show, Jer?
Olga Karpman: Of course he will.
Howie Mandel: Will you report back?
Olga Karpman: We'll find out. We'll see. And then if, if he has a good experience, he'll invite me back, or, I mean, he'll give me the space.
Olga Karpman: Anytime. This is nice one.
Howie Mandel: You like this?
Olga Karpman: Yeah.
Howie Mandel: All right. You're
Olga Karpman: welcome back anytime. I, I just live 20 minutes from here. We, we can continue. Okay.
Howie Mandel: Come back anytime.
Olga Karpman: Yeah.
Howie Mandel: Thank you
Olga Karpman: so much. Well, let's wrap it up, and the very last question: Who is the man behind the mask? That's just the standard one I have to ask.
Howie Mandel: Then do I have to answer?
Olga Karpman: Yeah. You can't go with... Like- Is it- ... Vitch is already knocking on the door ...
Howie Mandel: but you don't say yourself?
Olga Karpman: Who is that next version of Howie Mandel? Is it the s- it's not the same version because it's now.
Howie Mandel: No, I feel like a whole different person now. I, every... I feel like a whole different person.
Howie Mandel: We keep growing. We're never the person we were yesterday, and I won't be this person tomorrow.
Olga Karpman: Ladies and gentlemen, this was Howie Mandel for Unmasked. We'll be back for more.
Howie Mandel: Okay.
Olga Karpman: Thank you. I have more, more depth- Thank you ... conversations
Howie Mandel: with you. Thank you. That was beautiful. That was nice. Thank you.
Howie Mandel: Thank you.
Olga Karpman: Ta-da.
Howie Mandel: Ta-da. There we go.
Olga Karpman: Thank you.
Howie Mandel: Thank you
Olga Karpman: I'm so grateful you stayed till this moment to learn about the mask that Howie was wearing, and also about the mask that he was not wearing. Because as he mentioned on the show, those were two different aspects of our personalities. So let's find out what they really mean, and I'm gonna read it to you, a few things.
Olga Karpman: And if you'd like to know more masks and Unmasked Method, please download Seven Masks e-book, and you will learn more about the characters of the masks, about the characters that are, uh, on our shows as well. And as you know, with your support, with our community, we can invite more and more amazing guests, and really truly go beneath the surface deeper than anyone else.
Olga Karpman: Okay, so this time, me and Howie, we went deeper through the laughter. And the person who chooses this mask, this is by the way the jester mask, play is not foolish, the message that this mask gives you. Play is not foolish, it's divine rebellion. The ones who seem crazy often speak the deepest truths Do you think the people who always wear jester mask, who are always laughing, they do have a deeper message?
Olga Karpman: I'm just curious. Let me know in the comments. But here's the question that you'd like to ask yourself if you also notice that you're masking something in your life with humor: What's something you've only ever said as a joke because saying it straight felt too exposed? I have two more questions for this mask, so please download the e-book and let me know how did it go.
Olga Karpman: And then another mask is the warrior, so that's the opposite. This is the wounded boy mask. I don't know why, but I decided to show it to you as well, and that was present at the table as well. Courage is not in fighting. It is in finally putting the sword down. The heart does not need armor. Did you notice Howie wearing armor for all of us and showing the armor and showing the mask?
Olga Karpman: I do believe these masks choose to be at the show, right? So the message was right there. The heart does not need armor to be strong. It needs truth to be free. And the question you'd like to ask yourself if you'd like to go deeper on this and on this opposite side of the jester: What have you been carrying alone that was never meant to be carried alone?
Olga Karpman: Maybe it's the grief that we talked about with Howie. Maybe it's a mental problem that we talked about. Maybe something else. Let me know. Let me know and download the e-book to go even deeper on Unmasked Method, Unmasked Game. We're taking it easy, but with that easy and that laughter, we might be asking some good questions that takes us beneath the surface.
Olga Karpman: I'm so grateful you are with us and you are part of this wonderful community. Thank you so much. Let's keep creating, let's bring amazing guests, and let's continue to stay unmasked.
Olga Karpman: Thank you so much for watching. Subscribe for more unmasked conversations like this and watch this one next. You will love it.
Olga Karpman: See you there.
